Re-Organizing the Kitchen
From e-mealplanning.com December 28, 2009 Newsletter

You have already made a commitment to being organized in your house with subscribing to e-mealplanning.com and planning your meals ahead.  But maybe you need to take that further with re-organizing the kitchen.  The first step would be to go through the fridge, freezer and cupboards to purge old, expired or unwanted items.  Donate non-perishable goods that you don’t care to have yourself.  Think about using Goodwill, Salvation Army or Freecycle (http://www.freecycle.org/) for giving away appliances or gadgets you don’t want.  Don’t forget to use Still Tasty to help you determine what foods, oils and spices are ok to keep or should be tossed.  (iPhone users, they have an app!) Then wipe down shelves and counters and then start putting what you keep back.  Try to consider how you work in the kitchen and how the rest of your household uses the kitchen when deciding what should go where.  Utensils should be in drawers or on the countertop in a caddy like Pampered Chef’s Tool Turnabout.  Place them in a location near the stove so it’s easy to access them.  The same would go for spices and seasonings.  If you buy in bulk, be it large packages or from bulk bins, consider getting clear storage containers to use for storing those items.  It can make more use of the space with uniform containers that can stack or fit closer together.  We like Snapware, but you could even use inexpensive “disposable” food storage containers like the kind made by Ziploc or Gladware.  Those multipacks that come in a variety of sizes can work for anything from pasta to spices.  Even a package of a dozen Mason jars with lids could work well for bulk spices.
Keeping your kitchen organized will save you time and money in the long run.  You will keep better track of your inventory, preventing you from buying something you thought you didn’t have and when you know where everything is and it’s easy to access, meal prep is easier.
